Famed artist George Chacon depicts Taos Ski Valley history on Childrens Center
Local artist George Chacon is working his magic on Taos Ski Valleys childrens center. A gifted artist and veteran of large murals, Chacon will immortalize the history of skiing on the Kinderkfig building located in the beginner area of the ski area. The murals will feature some of Taos Ski Valleys famous characters including Ernie Blake, Rhoda Blake, Mickey Blake (son of Ernie and Rhoda), Wendy Stagg (daughter of Ernie and Rhoda) and other members of the Blake family as well as key individuals that helped make Taos Ski Valley a legendary skiing community.
The timing of the mural coincides with the Taos Ski Valleys 45th anniversary marketing theme. A 45th anniversary edition of the ski valley brochure featuring vintage photos of Ernie and Rhoda Blake helped inspire the piece and a poster honoring Ernie in a portrait by Denim Clements tie the marketing theme together.
The most well known mural by Chacon is El Santero in the heart of the Taos Historic District and was distinguished by its inclusion in Colliers Encyclopedias 1992 International Yearbook.
This is not the first time George Chacon has worked in the skiing theme. In 1998, Jean Mayer, owner of the Hotel St. Bernard and Ernie Blake Ski School Technical Director, contracted Chacon to create his Ski History Mural on the outside walls of the hotel. He studied early works of Scandinavian ski history to get the real feel of skiings early history. For more information on Taos Ski Valley and artist George Chacon, call (505)776-2291.
