Taos Ski Valley Opening Early!
Taos Ski Valley's General Manager Gordon Briner announced today, November 11th, 2002 that Taos Ski Valley will open early for the 2002-2003 season. As a result of good early season snowfall (nearly four feet midway,) Taos Ski Valley has received over the last several weeks; the lifts will open on Saturday, November 23rd.
A combination of plentiful natural snowfall and cold snowmaking temperatures have left a solid base and allowed the early opening, nearly a week earlier than the expected opening day of November 28th. According to Mountain Manager Bill Etchemendy the snow Taos Ski Valley has received so far has been extremely heavy and wet; Taos has received nearly 6 inches of moisture in 46 inches of snow. The dense snow makes a great base and has helped our snowmaking efforts. It should be a wonderful opening day and a super season.
To celebrate the great snow and encourage skiers to come up and try it out Taos is holding a 1/2 price sale December 1st – 13th. Tickets are only $16 during those days and area hotels are offering 1/2 price rooms as well. Some restrictions apply and details are available on our web site at skitaos.org.
The early opening has been supported by Taos Ski Valley s snowmaking system, one of the Southwest s largest. It is made up of compressors, large pumps and more than five miles of pipe. With this system, Taos Ski Valley s snowmaking crew can make high quality snow from the top of mountain to the bottom, covering 100% of beginner and intermediate terrain. Together with the natural snowfall, the snowmaking system ensures that there will be good coverage all over the mountain.
Skiers everywhere should dust off their equipment and get ready to ski opening weekend, it is sure to be the start of what promises to be a great season.
