Taos Ski Valley receives the first snow of the season

Just one week after the start of fall, Taos Ski Valley has received its first snowfall. The recent wet weather moving through the state of New Mexico has left the high peaks around Taos white, with several inches of snow falling above 11,000 feet.

Most of this snow will melt before the start of ski season, but it is good for the excitement in generates, commented Taos Ski Valley Events Coordinator Hano Blake.

The early moisture is good for more than just the buzz it generates; it also helps to produce a good ski season. If the winter starts with the ground being wetter than usual, it helps to preserve the snow that falls later in the early winter and can add more moisture to the storms that follow.

In any case it wont be long until the skiers in Northern New Mexico enjoy their favorite sport. Snowmaking operations in Taos start on October 18th and Taos Ski Valley is planning to be open for its 50th Anniversary year of skiing on Thanksgiving Day, November 24th, 2005.
