Adult and Junior Locals Programs begin January 8th & 11th
THE ADULT LOCALS PROGRAMS =
Every year skiers from around Northern New Mexico make a weekly trek to Taos Ski Valley to spend an afternoon enjoying the mountain with other skiers. The motivation behind their journey is the famous Taos Ski Valley Locals Clinics. =
The clinics, which begin Sunday (January 8) and Wednesday (January 11) attract skiers from all over the State of New Mexico and Southern Colorado, who come to take a series of classes with the legendary Ernie Blake Ski School. The classes meet every Sunday or Wednesday afternoon at 12:45 on Strawberry Hill. Each small group meets six times for two and a half hours with classes designed for skiers of all levels. The Sunday clinics are available for both Alpine and Telemark skiers. Wednesdays are alpine only. If you can get a group of 5 tele-skiers at a similar level, then we could have a tele locals on a Wednesday, said Jeff Mugleston, Manager of the Ernie Blake Ski School, the ski school is guest centered in its approaching to give the guest the greatest experience possible, we will do our best to take care of you. The coaching fee is $160; lift ticket is not included in lesson price. =
Make new friends who like to ski as much as you do. Skiers who participate in the clinics are sure to meet other skiers with whom they will ski with outside of classes. Every level of skier benefits from taking the classes. says Mugleston. Their skiing improves both from the technical guidance of the ski instructor and because of the support and encouragement of the group. You dont have to have a favorite instructor to participate in the Adult Locals program. Let the ski school know the level you ski and what you are most interested in learning and theyll be happy to arrange an instructor who fits your needs. =
A local is not just from Taos, They come from Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Farmington, even places like Alamosa and Pueblo in Southern Colorado and we have guests who come from as far north as Boulder, commented Hank King, Tele coordinator of the Ernie Blake Ski School, I have met and made a lot of really good friends who have been coming to the locals program for decades. Its the social tradition of skiing, their tradition of skiing in Taos, and that is an important part of the locals program. =

THE JUNIOR LOCALS The focus of the Junior Locals Clinic, the Shredders, is on learning skiing fundamentals, skiing varied terrain, conditions, and most importantly having fun. The big advantage for the shredders program is that the kids come back every week. The program is developed to move the kids along week-by-week, but the kids improve so quickly, that we are having to change instructors according to the childs ability, said Terry Su Tankersley, Manager of the Childrens Ski School. We cater to the childs needs, socialization process, physical dexterity, anxieties, progression, and acceptance, because we want this to lead to a continued life style. Were not baby sitting the kids, but teaching them about safety issues and give them a basis to make decisions. In doing so, the child is more aware of where they are on the mountain and become more comfortable in the winter environment. The Junior Locals Clinics are taught through the resorts nationally recognized Childrens Ski School, housed in the Kinderkfig. Classes are open to all levels of skiers and the program fee is $288, which pays for a morning and afternoon lesson, and includes a free lunch, free rental equipment and a free lift ticket. Teens 13-17 can choose between Junior Elite 2 or the Adult Ski School Locals Clinic. Space is limited - Walk-ins will be accepted only on a space available basis. =
Shredders Locals Clinics (3 through 17 years) Sunday Alpine only Junior Elite 1 is for potty trained 3 year olds to First Grade and Junior Elite 2 is for Second Graders to 17 years of age. The kids progress differently, so our program is designed to build skiers and find the best way to transfer information from the instructor to the child, not to get stuck on the technical aspects but to increase a childs performance, commented Tankersley. However, our lesson plan is organic, they can change according to what the needs are due to weather, snow conditions, and equipment. What we are seeing now is that we are preparing kids as young as six for skiing double black diamonds on the ridge. Some of our kids are able to ski terrain that I didnt see happening four years ago. Classes begin at 9:30 am this season and end at 2:30 pm. Please have your child at the Kinderakefig by 9:00 AM. Indoor supervision is available until 4:00 pm. Classes meet January 8, 15, 22, 29, February 5 & 12. =
The Kinderkfig Childrens Center Taos Ski Valleys 18,000 square foot Kinderkfig was designed with young skiers in mind. The space was created to work for smaller people and to foster a comfortable environment, with separate areas for the different age groups. But spaces alone dont make a good program. The childrens programs are staffed by people who excel at turning children into confident, lifelong skiers. The secret is in making skiing fun and keeping the class size small. Children can learn the pleasure of skiing at any age and most will begin to actually ski between three and seven depending on their individual abilities. Parents can ski worry free knowing their children are well taken care of, and are having fun learning a sport that they will be able to enjoy for a lifetime. =
